Panchakarma is designed to take out the excess doshas (toxins) from the body. So mostly the Panchakarma procedures are recommended for patients after the proper assessment of the body. Panchakarma can also be taken by healthy individuals during the seasonal change for the maintenance of health. In short, any adult can take panchakarma.
A complete procedure of panchakarma includes three steps viz. preparation phase, operative phase and recovery phase.
Preparation phase - 5 days to 7 days
Panchakarma procedure - 1 day
Recovery phase - 5 days to 7 days
So, a minimum of 15 days is required to do any panchakarma (detox) procedure where there is no shortcuts available till date.
Ayurveda is written in such a way that there is no side effect if applied with thorough understanding of the philosophy. As known, health is the balanced state of the body. Any thing in excess or less will create imbalance and ill health. So, it is recommended to take any ayurveda medicines only after the understanding of such imbalance and the effect of medicines on the body.
The systemic side effects like is western medicines are rarely seen with ayurveda treatment unless the source of medicine used is unknown.
